Rainwater Drainage.
As a reputable block paving installer, we make sure all clients are aware of rainwater drainage and the solutions. It’s often overlooked due to difficulty installing and extra cost, also many rouge trades simply do not install it! This then leads to puddles and large amounts of water gathering on the new driveway, causing the ground and new paving to sink.
Because of this and changes to Government Legislation its becoming increasingly important to focus on well balanced and sustainable driveway design.
There are many options for rainwater drainage from permeable paving to soak away linear drainage channels. All can be discussed further with the client.
How Is The Paving Laid?
Preparation for block paving is vital, without a good solid base and firm edgings the driveway can have complications later on. A minimum base of 150mm consisting of “type 1” stone will be spread and mechanically compacted on a terram membrane, Terram is a material used to allow water to pass through but stop weeds growing up.
A layer of sharp sand is the spread at about 30mm, this is then given the required gradients/levels to allow for water drainage. The sand is levelled off using “screed bars” and a “straight edge”. Pavers can then be laid to whatever design the client has chosen, examples of design can be found bellow.
Once the paving is laid, kiln dried sand is spread onto the top surface of the block paving this is then swept into all joints. This is then mechanically compacted to ensure a tight fit for all paving, locks everything into place.
To complete this process a stabilising solution will be applied to the new paved area to ensure all sand in the joints is sealed and lock into place.
